In Schleswig-Holstein, and particularly in Dithmarschen, crude oil has a long tradition. For more than 150 years, oil-bearing chalk and then crude oil have been mined and processed here on the North Sea coast. Spanning a total area of 134 hectares, Heide Refinery processes more than four million tonnes of crude oil every year at its company site in Hemmingstedt.
A significant proportion of the petrol and diesel fuel consumed in Schleswig-Holstein now comes from our refinery, which, in its current form, has been part of the Klesch Group since 2010, but already looks back on a long history.

Heide Refinery sets standards
As Germany’s northernmost refinery, we at Heide Refinery play an important role in the energy transition. Together with the state government and leading industry partners, we have signed the implementation agreement for the climate-neutral transformation of the west coast. By making greater use of alternative raw materials and using resources responsibly, we at Heide Refinery are now setting new standards in the energy transition.
Our comprehensive efforts are aimed at significantly reducing CO₂ emissions and promoting sustainable technologies. As part of the industry alliance for climate neutrality in Schleswig-Holstein, we make a vital contribution to the regional value chain for green hydrogen and are actively committed to creating a supportive market framework.
The hydrogen storage caverns in the vicinity of Heide Refinery are crucial to the development of a hydrogen economy in Schleswig-Holstein. Existing knowledge on the suitability, conversion and use of existing caverns is of great national importance. They support the development of a green hydrogen infrastructure on the west coast of Schleswig-Holstein and help establish the region as a pioneer in hydrogen technology in order to achieve a sustainable energy future.
