Heide Refinery products –
sophisticated solutions
Statistically, every citizen consumes around 1,900 litres of crude oil per year. This figure includes not only the energy for transport and heating, but also the proportion of the various products made from crude oil or petroleum that are used day after day by almost all people and without which our modern society would hardly be imaginable. While the purchasing market for crude oil is global, the distribution of a refinery is more local and regional due to the transport costs associated with product delivery.
We manufacture specifically for the regional northern German market. This includes petrol station operators and petroleum traders, airports and local chemical plants. We produce around 450,000 tonnes of petrochemical products every year, which are used as raw materials for chemical products.
State-of-the-art processes
at Heide Refinery
A refinery consists of three process areas: separation, conversion and refinement. Over the past few decades, conversion in particular has led to a tremendous increase in yield.
While conventional distillation produces up to 50 per cent heavy oil, the processing of this residual amount changes the structure of the individual molecules in such a way that more high-quality products such as petrol or middle distillate can be extracted from the crude oil.
Thanks to its history, Heide Refinery has always refined high-density raw materials.
In terms of technology, this means that we have repeatedly made major investments in production facilities and processes since the 1950s in order to adapt the refinery to the latest technological innovations.
