Our vision for the energy supply of tomorrow
Heide Refinery has been a key part of Schleswig-Holstein’s energy supply for decades. Processing some 4.5 million tonnes of crude oil a year, we are one of the region’s main fuel suppliers, including the lion’s share of the kerosene used at Hamburg Airport, one of Germany’s major aviation hubs. But as the world changes, we are changing with it – our goal is a sustainable transformation to renewable energies and low-carbon production.

The safety of people and the environment, high quality and information security standards, efficient energy management and climate protection are important to us and represent the guiding principles of our day-to-day work. Our certification in accordance with ISO standards 9001, 14001, 45001, 27001 and 50001 shows just how successful we are in this regard.
Under the ISCC sustainability certification system, the refinery also holds ISCC EU certificates for the use of bio-methanol in the MTBE plant and ISCC PLUS certification for the processing of sustainable naphtha into ethylene, propylene, benzene, toluene and xylene.

Hydrogen – an innovative key to the future
The development of a hydrogen economy is a key pillar of the future energy supply. Heide Refinery already boasts a hydrogen pipeline to Brunsbüttel, one of Germany’s largest chemical parks, and is connected with the region’s industrial cluster. This opens up a wealth of opportunities:
Alongside the production of green hydrogen, neighbouring caverns could be used for storage purposes in order to stabilise the grid or enter the hydrogen market. A potential connection to the German hydrogen backbone and a link to Danish hydrogen suppliers could also be implemented in the future.

Making the most
of renewable energy
The region around Heide Refinery is known for its high renewable energy generation capacity. The many wind farms often produce more electricity than can be fed into the existing grid, which leads to wind turbines being switched off. We see a golden opportunity here: Raffinerie Heide can take on surplus green energy and use it for its processes, not only boosting efficiency, but also easing the burden on grid expansion. A planned converter station close to the refinery will enable us to feed power from offshore wind farms straight into our systems, thus reducing our dependency on fossil fuels.
The smart way to
increase energy efficiency and reduce CO₂
With a view to further reducing our carbon footprint, we work continuously to improve the energy efficiency of our plants. Thanks to outstanding optimisation management, we can precisely identify and implement potential energy savings. In the long term, we are planning to use carbon capture utilization and storage technologies to achieve a substantial reduction in carbon emissions. This helps us to make a greater contribution to climate neutrality.
Co-processing and the integration of sustainable raw materials
We are already drawing on innovative production methods, such as co-processing. Here, biogenic and synthetic raw materials are processed in our existing facilities, allowing us to lower the share of fossil fuels in our products.
These technologies enable us to produce more sustainable fuels without major conversion work on proven infrastructures. We are particularly well positioned to meet increasing market requirements in the field of sustainable aviation fuels (bio SAF).
Focused on the future, resistant to crises
Alongside our role as a pioneer of the energy transition, we also bear special responsibility for supply security in Germany. As part of the critical infrastructure, we work closely with the federal government in order to safeguard the availability of our fuels for public supply, including in times of crisis.
