Heide Refinery is a key player in northern Germany’s energy supply and plays a significant role as a petroleum processor and chemicals company. With two strategically important locations in Hemmingstedt and Brunsbüttel, it ensures a reliable supply of fuels and petrochemical products for the region and beyond.

chemicals company
Our jet fuel supplies almost all flights departing from Hamburg Airport. And with the heating oil we provide, 250,000 houses with oil heating between Flensburg and Hamburg can be comfortably heated.
About 60 per cent of our crude oil is used for the production of fuels. But as a refinery, we are also a chemicals company. We produce around 450,000 tonnes of petrochemical products every year. The chemicals industry processes these intermediates to make detergents, tyres and car interiors.
The refinery as a petroleum processor and chemicals company
Our jet fuel supplies almost all flights departing from Hamburg Airport. And with the heating oil we provide, 250,000 houses with oil heating between Flensburg and Hamburg can be comfortably heated.
About 60 per cent of our crude oil is used for the production of fuels. But as a refinery, we are also a chemicals company. We produce around 450,000 tonnes of petrochemical products every year. The chemicals industry processes these intermediates to make detergents, tyres and car interiors.

Heide Refinery is a middle distillate plant.
We primarily produce diesel, heating oil and jet fuel in Hemmingstedt. This targeted production is made possible by a state-of-the-art hydrocracker. By virtue of this highly complex system, we are able to significantly improve our variety of crude oil products.
With 21 kilometres of road and nine kilometres of railway track with a total of 27 points, we ensure smooth production and logistics processes at our company headquarters in Hemmingstedt.

Brunsbüttel site:
central hub for all markets
With a strategically ideal location at the intersection of the Kiel Canal and the Elbe, ChemCoast Park Brunsbüttel is the largest industrial estate in Schleswig-Holstein. Right behind the lock chambers are our Brunsbüttel tank farm and oil terminal, Heide Refinery’s second site.
A second terminal on the Elbe river is connected to the tank farm in Brunsbüttel by pipeline. Tankers with a load capacity of up to 120,000 tonnes can dock here and pump crude oil into the tanks of our storage facility. With a storage capacity of 495,000 tonnes and an annual product throughput of 2.35 million tonnes, the Brunsbüttel tank farm is the hub of our logistics chain.
Not only are the facilities for unloading crude oil located here, but the long-distance transport pipeline from the Mittelplate oil platform also ends here.

Pipelines – the lifelines of our business
All of our logistics between the Brunsbüttel tank farm and Heide Refinery therefore also takes place via overground and underground pipelines. The 32-kilometre distance is covered by a total of three lines, each with three strands.
The crude oil is pumped from the Brunsbüttel tank farm to the Hemmingstedt refinery for processing, while the finished products are simultaneously transported back to the Brunsbüttel facility.
We have direct connections with our petrochemical customers at ChemCoast Park Brunsbüttel, ensuring an uninterrupted supply.
According to the German Environment Agency, pipelines are amongst the safest and most effective ways of transporting liquid products.
We transport our products and crude oil, as well as water and waste water, via a total of 385 kilometres of pipelines.
