Environmental and climate protection at Heide Refinery
We play an active role in shaping the energy transition. Our efforts are focused not only on consistently minimising the impact of our operations, but also on working with partners and various government bodies to promote renewable energy sources such as green hydrogen, which is regarded as a key element in the transition to more sustainable energy solutions.
By continuously optimising the energy efficiency of our plants, the refinery has sustainably reduced energy consumption and thus also CO₂ emissions. Taking the period from 2005 to 2020, a continuous reduction of around 10,000 tonnes of CO₂ per year was achieved.
We meet the highest levels of safety, environmental stewardship and operational standards
Our sustainability performance is assessed by the rating agency EcoVadis.
EcoVadis evaluates our performance in the areas of the environment, labour and human rights, ethics and sustainability, and recognises our efforts to use our resources responsibly.
Our commitment to water protection and clean air
Since the 1960s, we have been working to improve air purity and reduce emissions at the refinery in order to make our contribution to environmental and climate protection. This includes desulphurisation plants, for example, which reduce the sulphur content of combustibles and fuels. The refinery supplies the municipalities of Hemmingstedt and Lieth, as well as the adjacent Westküste business park, with excess heat from heating energy. This heat goes, for example, to greenhouses with pepper and tomato plants. Emissions of sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxides from the process furnaces and the power plant have been significantly reduced.

a measure that is well worthwhile
Rising carbon taxes in the coming years will increase the pressure on greenhouse gas-emitting industry. For this reason, Heide Refinery is restructuring its energy management system in order to operate more energy-efficiently in the future and significantly reduce energy consumption.
Our goal is to increase efficiency every year.
This means that we are aiming to reduce energy consumption in the long term. Compared to other refineries, this would put us in the second quartile of the Solomon study.
We contribute to the achievement of Germany’s climate and energy policy targets and are part of the IEEKN network for energy efficiency and climate protection.

Seamless analysis of
our production processes
The employees of our in-house laboratory ensure that the production process is continuously monitored, from the delivery of the crude oil to the supply of the finished product.
By taking and analysing samples regularly, they ensure that the quality of our products meets our customers’ expectations. When it comes to crude oil processing, too, we pay particular attention to meeting our customers’ needs 100 per cent.
